Whats Over There

Is This Typically an Act? Yes

Probable Strength of Hand: Strong

What Is This Player Up To?: She's avoiding direct eye contact with her opponent so as not to discourage his bet. When a player has a strong hand, she tends to act non-threatening.

Counter-Strategy: Even if you have a marginal hand, you should probably sit this one out.

Additional Comments: Poker is played in a clockwise direction. If a player looks to her left as the action approaches, chances are she's concealing strong cards.

Itching for a Bet

Is This Typically an Act? Yes

Probable Strength of Hand: Weak

What Is This Player Up To?: By appearing ready to bet on anything, he wants to look like a player with a strong hand. He's hoping to discourage his opponent from playing a weak or marginal hand.

Counter-Strategy: Stay in the game, even if you have a relatively weak hand.

Additional Comments: Players with strong hands generally don't do anything to discourage their opponent's bets.

Not Feeling It

Is This Typically an Act? Yes

Probable Strength of Hand: Strong

What Is This Player Up To?: She's acting bored and avoiding eye contact so as to appear like less of a threat. A player with a strong hand normally doesn't like to call attention to herself.

Counter-Strategy: Don't bet unless you have a strong hand. Definitely don't attempt a bluff.

Additional Comments: A player will subconsciously sit upright, or even lean forward, when she's been dealt a good hand. Her posture is an important clue in determining whether or not she's putting on an act.
